Oklahoma Megan's Law
Getting its name from Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was put into federal law in 1995. Megan's Law makes it mandatory for every state
have a system in place for alerting local residents when a sexual offender is moves into their community.
Megan was only seven years old when a previous sexual offender that lived accross the street from her family, abducted,
violently rapped, and murdered her. It was agreed that if her family or other community members had been alerted that a previous
sexual offender was living in their community, this heinous act would have been avoided. On that train of thought, the U.S. Congress
passed the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", nicknamed Megan's Law, without any objections.
Since the law was enacted, Oklahoma has made it a point to protect its supplying the most recent information
relevant to convicted sex offenders and their place of residence. The law has proven that though sexual assaults are still a
problem in the United States, acts committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
